In March 1999 the State of São Paulo Research Foundation/FAPESP launched the Research Program on Characterization, Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use of the Biodiversity of the State of São Paulo, also known as "BIOTA/FAPESP: The Virtual Institute of Biodiversity", as a result of the articulation of the scientific community in compliance to the Convention on Biological Diversity/CBD. In November 2009 FAPESP approved the new Science Plan & Strategies, renewing its support to the Program up to 2020.

History of the Biota/Fapesp Program |
| |
-
Officially created in March 1999, the Research Program on Sustainable Conservation of Biodiversity, named "Biota/Fapesp Program, the Virtual Institute of Biodiversity" was the result of the work of a group of researchers that, during three years, with the support of the Coordination of Biological Sciences and the backing of the Scientific Directory of FAPESP, made the scientific community aware of the necessity to take concrete actions for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB), signed by Brazilian government during ECO-92.
This articulation among researchers had its beginning in 1996, at a meeting organized by the Coordination of Biological Sciences and Scientific Directory of FAPESP, with approximately 40 leaders. In that meeting, a coordinating group was established. The initiative was known as "BIOTASP" or "Biota São Paulo", and the coordinating group defined a chronogram and the main activities necessary to create a State Program that would have the support of Fapesp.
A summary of the main activities and events of Biotasp and Biota/Fapesp are presented below.
